A Practical Reconstruction of Ancient Megalithic Engineering

Abstract

Ancient stonework is best understood as a complete operation: choose the stone, free it from the bed, support it, move it through a real landscape, set it accurately, and leave a surface that can survive. Modern discussions too often isolate one step, or scale a tabletop demonstration beyond what its mechanics will carry. Drawing on a lifetime of practical stone handling and on full-scale experimental work for PBS NOVA, a small pyramid and two obelisk-raising trials, this paper treats quarrying, hauling, and placement as one connected chain rather than a search for a single clever trick. The central lesson of the experimental record is that mass changes the problem: a sequence that succeeds at two tons can fail at twenty-five, and unsuccessful trials, honestly reported, are often more informative than clean demonstrations. Egyptian practice illustrates the point. The Nile and its canals served as the main transport artery, documented in the diary of Merer and reinforced by the recent mapping of an abandoned Nile branch beside the pyramid fields; on land, sledges on prepared and dampened surfaces, abrasive-assisted cutting of hard stone, and gravity or removable support for final placement each solved a different part of the sequence. I set out an evidence ladder to separate what is documented from what is demonstrated, mechanically plausible, or merely proposed, and I argue that any claim about ancient stoneworking should be judged by whether a complete, controllable sequence fits the surviving evidence and survives the contact pressures it imposes. The craft is not mysterious. It is the accumulated memory of organized trials.
