Australopithecines: Separate Kind, Not Transitional Form

The australopithecines are routinely presented as the anatomical bridge between apes and humans, the fossil group that turns common ancestry from an inference into a demonstration. This paper argues the opposite: that in every system where the ape-to-human transition would have to show itself, the australopithecines instead mark a boundary. The hyoid of A. afarensis is ape-like, built to support laryngeal air sacs rather than articulate speech, and no transitional form bridges it to the human bar-shaped hyoid. The pelvis, though capable of upright walking, retains a long, posteriorly oriented ischium, strongly flared ilia, and a short, weakly curved sacrum, a configuration adapted for climbing and a bent-hip, bent-knee gait rather than the efficient, extended-limb stride of Homo sapiens. This same pattern recurs across the group: Little Foot (StW 573) reproduces Lucy's pelvic template rather than departing from it, which both confirms that Lucy's anatomy was representative and undercuts the "pygmy human" reading of her skeleton. The skull and brain remain within the ape range throughout. Drawing on Stern and Susman (1983) and the modern synthesis of VanSickle et al. (2018), the paper contends that the long, posteriorly directed ischium is a diagnostic signature of Australopithecus that is absent from every securely known human, including Homo naledi and Homo floresiensis, whose fragmentary pelves cannot bear the comparative weight placed on them. The mosaic traits so often read as transitional are better explained as ecological adaptation within a distinct, created ape kind, front-loaded flexibility drawn out by a disrupted post-Flood world, not the emergence of genuine anatomical novelty. The evidence points to discontinuity, not descent.
